Face Potions have a Pecking Order

If your like most women, you have an arsenal of face products that you use daily- but experts say even the best beautifies in the world won’t reach their full potential if you layer them the wrong way.

*Apply from lightest (or thinnest) to heaviest (or thickest) to make sure each ingredient can be absorbed into the skin, and wait two to three minutes between layers so you don’t dilute them.

STEP 1- Liquids, like toner or astringent.

STEP 2- Serums, gels, or anything translucent.

STEP 3- Moisturizing Lotion.

STEP 4- Eye cream.

STEP 5- Sunscreen, regardless of consistency.

HAPPY LAYERING!

Skincare No No…

As important as the right skincare products are for your face, many women never bother to consider what they use for everyday washing and actually use the same bar soap they use to wash the rest of their skin!

Why is this such a beauty no-no? Soap has many ingredients that are meant to strip away everything on the surface of the skin; this is how you get clean. However, the skin on your face is especially delicate and needs a good supply of natural oil in order to stay healthy.

Those natural oils are what keep your skin from getting dry and developing wrinkles, and washing them away with bar soap is going to lead to tight, dry, flaking skin on the face, and to those dreaded premature wrinkles.

The right cleanser for your face should also add back the moisture it takes away. Regular moisturizing soaps don’t have these ingredients, or will have ingredients that are too harsh for the face. You may see more breakouts and skin irritation if you use bar soap on your face, even if it claims to be gentle and to add moisture to your skin.

Use a gentle cleanser meant for the face when you wash; some days you may not even need a cleanser. If you’ve gone without makeup and don’t have a buildup of oil and dirt, a cool wet cloth can clean your skin adequately.

Facial Waxing…

This specialized treatment is designed to smooth your skin, remove facial hair and progressively suppress hair growth with a patented technology hair inhibitor treatment that is gentle enough for the face. After 10-12 treatments performed every 3-4 weeks, you will begin to notice less hair growth until there is little or no re-growth left.

Beauty Bird Lounge has the perfect solution, from “peach fuzz” to dark coarse facial hair, and everything in between.

Bronze, Highlight, Contour Face Mapping

WONDERING how to get that healthy sun-kissed glow on your cheeks? It’s amazing what a bit of blush, bronzer and highlighter can do to accentuate, slim and define your features.

Map Your Face!

Blush, bronzing and highlighting is all about location, location, location. Knowing where to apply these products is essential for achieving a sculpted and defined look.

Knowing where to apply what product where is key to giving your face the “lift” it needs.

Bronzing / Contouring

For beginners, make a “fish-lips face” by sucking in your cheeks to find the hollows of your cheek. Using a small fluffy powder brush or one that is elongated, buff the product into the hollow of your cheek in circular motions. Don’t go too heavy and make sure to buff away the harsh lines – you want a subtle indentation, not a full-on dark line.

Other places that you can contour include your jaw-line, the sides of your nose for a slimmer nose, your temples, as well as  cleavage.

Blush

Blush is great for revitalising complexion that is dull, helping you look fresh-faced and alert.

Start applying from the apples of your cheeks and buff upwards toward the tip of your ear. It should be applied above the contour of your cheekbones and below the highlight. Rounding it off to emphasize the apples of your cheeks makes for a beautiful glow.

Apply blush above the contour of your cheekbones and below the highlight.

Highlighting

Using a small fluffy brush, sweep the lighter-than-your-skin-tone powder across the top of your cheek-bones above your blush area, on the bridge of your nose, across the tip of your chin, on the crescent of your lip, below your brow arch; and if you don’t have oily skin, across the middle of your forehead.

Voilà !

BROW POWER

Beautifully shaped eyebrows with a nice arch are an important part of a polished look. When done well, eyebrow shaping calls attention to your eyes, frames them, and makes them appear more open.

Common Mistakes

  •    It’s easy to make mistakes when you do it yourself. The most common mistake is over-tweezing into a thin, high, rounded eyebrow that gives your face a permanently surprised look.

  •   Another common mistake of do-it-yourselfers is creating an unflattering fish-hook shape where the thickest part of the brow gets much thinner abruptly. For people with thin, blonde eyebrows, it’s easy to take too much off the sides so the brow seems to disappear.

Don’ts

Don’t have your brows tweezed for free at make-up counters. The people there are make-up artists, not brow experts. They tend to make the same mistakes that people do at home.

Don’t get your brows waxed at a resort spa or with anyone whose work you haven’t seen. You don’t know how often they do it, and could end up with a disaster — badly shaped or over waxed brows that don’t grow back easily.

Find an eyebrow designer who specializes in eyebrows. A good eyebrow designer will create a brow shape that is right for your face shape and the kind of eyebrow you have to work with — light, medium or full. You can also ask someone whose brows you admire who shapes their brows.  http://on.fb.me/wYvIky

Build a monthly visit to the eyebrow designer into your beauty budget, just like haircuts, color, and manicures and pedicures. It will cost anywhere from $30 for smaller cities to $120 for a celebrity eyebrow designer.

Don’t get your eyebrows waxed if you’re using a product like Accutane or Retin-A. It can take off the outer layer of skin.

Check out products that can help thin brows look fuller. Lorraine has a brow filler to fill in bare spots, and a brow shaper that looks like clear mascara and holds the full, defined brow in place. http://bit.ly/zLOzNL

Finding the Right SHAPE for your face! This can be tricky…

If you have a round face, a high-arched, angular brow will make your face look thinner.

Conversely, if you have a long face, a more horizontal eyebrow with an arch that is further out towards your hair line will make your face appear fuller.

A heart-shaped or square face is balanced out by round eyebrows.

To minimize a large nose, aim for highly arched, dark or thick eyebrows.

Eyes will look larger with thin, angled brows.

Rounder brows will soften a sharp or pointy chin.

Large eyes are more proportional with thicker, dark colored brows.

If you wear glasses, pick a pair that matches the shape of your brow, instead attempting to make your brow match the frames.

3 Simple Rules… Ideal Eyebrow Shape

The perfect eyebrow shape already in place for this drawing, showing the three lines being used in her design. Notice when someone shapes the brows correctly, the eyes are framed nicely. If the first thing you notice on someone is their eyebrows, then they’re not the right shape.

Tips

Use Your Brows to Lift Eyebrow shape can do wonders for mature women. A Higher arch gives her face an overall “lift”, while still looking stylish. But don’t start going crazy when tweezing your brows the higher the arch doesn’t mean more years are taken away.

Eyebrow Tinting Older women’s brows often tend to get gray too. So instead of using regular hair color, choose special eyebrow dye! Also Great for lashes http://bit.ly/xp9X6Q (lash tinting!) Ranges anywhere from $30-40 and lasts up to 3-4 weeks.

The Girl Next Door Clean up Small eyebrows with larger features don’t mesh well. Your face shows you can still have full brows that don’t look overgrown.

All Dolled Up Show off your beautiful eyebrow shape! Women that have lighter, smaller brows tend to get lost when they’re all made up. Add some definition and enhance the color to show off their fabulous shape, and frame your eyes!

Straight Brows Simple Yet Elegant Just because your eyebrow shape is straight doesn’t mean it has to be boring. You have to work with what you have, as this model probably was born with naturally ‘straight’ brows. So instead of working against what she has and trying to get a lot of shape, a simple arch with definition frames her face.

   Good Luck… -Lorraine (Aesthetician)

HomeMade Lip Balm

Chapstick creates a barrier between your lips and the brisky air beyond that likes to sap the moisture and vitality from your luscious pucker. And in lieu of petroleum by-products that we’d rather not slather across our mouths - or even pricey, natural alternatives - why not opt for this homemade recipe that will have you and eleven of your friends covered until it melts in your car or falls in the dirt - like all good chapsticks inevitably do?

So, this recipe makes enough for twelve chapsticks - one for every purse, every pocket or every family member, you decide. You have the option of recycling old lip balm containers, or you can purchase empty tubes, tins and jars.

What You’ll Need:

2 tablespoons beeswax (about 1 oz)

2 tablespoons coconut oil

2 tablespoons shea butter

12 lip balm containers

A dropper

Optional: Add 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil or a couple drops of your favorite flavoring, such as chocolate or vanilla extract.

What to Do:

1. Melt beeswax in a small pan over low heat. Add coconut oil and shea butter, melting the ingredients together. Add your essential oils here.

2. Using a small medicinal dropper, pour the melted liquid into your lip balm containers. Add a few extra drops to the top after filling each container as the ingredients will shrink as they cool.

3. Cool completely to harden. Cover with cap and decorate or label if you’d like. Distribute as desired.
